Gerald L. “Jerry” Hepp to be honored at Marine Corps League Annual Picnic

WATERTOWN — At 2 p.m. on Aug. 23, a statue dedication will take place in honor of Watertown’s Jerry Hepp.

The Marine Corps League picnic is from noon-6 p.m. with food available from 1-4 p.m. at Aero Park located at Boomer Street and South Ninth Street in Watertown.

Hepp died in June of 2024. His wife, Linda Hepp, and their children: Ryan (Mallory) Hepp and Casey (Travis Riggs), and grandchildren Colby, Levi, and Keaton Hepp, Myles Krueger, and Elowyn Riggs will be accepting the honor in his absence.

Hepp served in the United States Marine Corps from 1971-1973. He meritoriously received every rank advancement. He became squad leader and was promoted to Private First Class at the end of boot camp in San Diego, Calif. He made the rank of Lance Corporal following a training on a new at the time military vehicle, the Amtrac LVTP-7. He graduated top of his class. He was made an instructor and trained personnel in how to use the vehicle in ship to shore training at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and in Norfolk, Va. There he received the rank of corporal.

After only 19 months of service he was promoted to E5 Sergeant. He was honorably discharged in June of 1973. He became a charter member of the Marine Corps League of Watertown, the Bartelme-Schewfel Detachment 349 in 1975.

Once out of the Marine Corps, he worked for Koplin Excavating for seven years before starting his own excavating business, Jerry Hepp Excavating Inc. in 1980.

Hepp gave generously to the community with his time, talents, or monetary donations. Hepp donated trailers to be used as a stage for the Watertown street dances and Relay for Life events at the high school. He often had multiple units or sponsorships for local parades. He donated time and material in the excavation of the Watertown High School weight room in 2007, the elevator addition at the Elks Lodge and the flag cage in front to ease changing of the American Flag.

Hepp also contributed to several community projects such as the construction of the Survive Alive House in 1994 used by the Watertown Fire Department and pulled it through the Fourth of July parade. He was named Parade Marshal in 1998. He was instrumental in the launching of the Watertown Health and Wellness Center. He was involved with sending boxes full of donated meals and essentials that were shipped to troops overseas during the Iran/Iraq War in 2008. He also ordered the flag poles and facilitated the work of adding the monuments and flags at Veterans Park in 2007.

He served on multiple boards and organizations in the Watertown community: Chickens Unlimited, Elks Lodge, Moose Lodge, Watertown Builders and Trades, VFW, American Legion, and Watertown Aviation. “Jerry served as a sort of ‘go-to guy’ for anyone that knew him,” Linda said. “He was a great resource to be able to get things done.

“It’s a tremendous honor for Jerry to be recognized at The Marine Corps League Aero Park statue dedication. He was a foundational part of Aero Park starting with the bulldozing of trees in 1995,” Linda said. “He and his family along with other Marine Corps League members have worked tirelessly to make the park the beautiful destination that it is today.”

It was 30 years ago the local airport, other area businesses, and families donated time and money to the dream of having Aero Park.

Hepp was the lead man in the construction and excavation of every piece at the park since the start — from pavilions to bathrooms, gazebo made to pergola, the 9/11 Memorial, and he even had some thoughts on the Vietnam Wall before his passing.

Hepp’s wife, Linda, urged individuals to visit Aero Park on Saturday for the special dedication. Tickets are $20 and include food and an entry into the raffle drawing.

AERO PARK ANNUAL BENEFIT PICNIC

Saturday, August 25th marked another successful Aero Park fundraiser golf outing and picnic.

Ron Krueger, former Watertown mayor and current commander of Pitterle-Beaudoin American Legion Post No. 189, was honored in a ceremony naming the Veteran’s Statue at Marine Corps League Aero Park after him. Wisconsin Representative John Jagler and Commandant Gary Stueber made the presentation.

A catered lunch consisting of pulled pork, pasta salad, potato salad, baked beans, Ingersoll Farms sweet corn, buns, pickles, cookies and beverages was enjoyed by all.  The cash bar offered many cold drinks to the thirsty Marines and friends. During the picnic lunch, winners of the golf event were recognized and lucky raffle winners were announced.  A silent and live auction of donated items helped raise additional funds. The grand prize awarded was a 50” Sceptre TV. All proceeds are for the ongoing maintenance and improvements at Marine Corps League Aero Park on Boomer Street.

A special donation bucket was set out to collect funds for MCL 349 member Tim Schlesner and his wife who were injured in a motorcycle accident while traveling in Cheyenne, WY.  Picnic attendees had the opportunity to write a card or note of encouragement to Tim.

Thanks to all who donated, volunteered or participated in the Aero Park event this year.
